It’s people, people, people

Like pretty much everyone else I know, I am heading towards Christmas trying to get everything up-to-date before the magical date of December 25th.  Why this becomes an unspoken deadline I don’t know, but every year it’s the same.

An Asian proverb says that “He that will not reflect is a ruined man”, so not wanting to be ruined, in the middle of the Christmas frenzy I chose to reflect back on 2016. On thinking what has made it an exciting and challenging year for me, I came to this conclusion — it’s the people I have encountered along the way.

These people; my clients, colleagues and friends have made my life richer. I have learnt from them, been inspired and challenged by them, motivated, encouraged and supported by them. Surrounding myself with great people has enabled me to be bold and reach out for the things my lack of courage would have prevented me from doing.

“In learning to know other things and other minds, we become more intimately acquainted with ourselves, and are to ourselves better worth knowing.”

Philip Gilbert Hamilton

Great leaders in all walks of life understand that to achieve great things they must surround themselves with people who are better than they are. By surrounding ourselves with extraordinary people it will open our eyes to new and bigger ideas.

Having people support and encourage us is important but we also need those who are comfortable giving us frank advice and are willing to challenge or push us to another level. We must learn to accept such challenges and listen carefully, discerning what is best for us and our business.

So as you start making your plans and setting your goals for 2017, I encourage you to think about the sort of people you want around you. Remember; a genius is a person who surrounds himself with people smarter than himself.

Wishing you all a happy and safe festive season.
